Today, bamboo floors are becoming a popular alternative to the traditional hardwood-type floors. Although bamboo is really a type of very long, hollow grass (not wood), once it goes through the manufacturing process it is difficult to tell a bamboo floor from a hardwood floor. Bamboo is a fast growing, renewable resource that is a very hard and dimensionally stable. Floors made from bamboo are a great choice for many areas of the home where you might use hardwood. Bamboo floors are installed and maintained in the same manner as the better grade hardwood floors and are available in both solid bamboo and engineered bamboo planks.
Botanically, bamboo is not a wood at all, but rather a grass. Bamboo is attractive as a building material because it is very hard, strong, and dimensionally stable. Environmentally, it’s hard to argue with a wood-substitute that matures in three years, regenerates without need for replanting, and requires minimal fertilization or pesticides. In fact, these larger species of bamboo have been used in construction for thousands of years, and even in modern Asian cities it’s not uncommon to see a large concrete building being constructed from bamboo scaffolding.
Which type of flooring is made from a renewable resource, is soft and warm underfoot, and has natural sound-deadening and insulation characteristics? - Cork Floors! Most American homeowners are not familiar with all the benefits of cork floors. For instance, do you know that cork is antimicrobial, resistant to mold and mildew and is a naturally sustainable resource? With the help from today's manufacturing technology, cork flooring is now offered in many colors in both planks and tiles. Cork floors can be glue-downed and/or floated over a wide variety of sub-floors, including wood, concrete slabs and some types of existing floors. Cork floors are also offered with a glue-less interlocking system for faster, no-mess installations.
It is important to remember that cork is a natural product and will fade in direct sunlight. Cork will generally yellow with age and cork floors will react to changes in relative humidity and heat. Wet mopping is never recommended and may cause the seams to swell.
